NMS Support in MALA?

  • Greetings - I've just made the switch from MAMEWAH to MALA and so far have been very impressed! I'm sorry I don't speak German, because you obviously have a great community here, and I'd love to participate more.

I have a question: is there a way to use an NMS file for non-MAME emulators in MALA? I'm using Nebula, and in MALA, when I generate the main game list, all I get is a bunch of very non-descriptive filenames. I could go into the Gamelist Editor and change them one by one, but that could be very tedious. And there's an NMS file on the Nebula website, so I was wondering if there was any way to use this?

    Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

there is no native support of nms files in MaLa. But MaLa is also using name files with a different format:

    rom=name

    The nms file format is:

    name|rom

I think you can convert the files with an text editor to the MaLa format. On the other hand, what do you need to edit in the names? There are some name edit functions (search and replace, remove brackets, ...) in the MalaGamelist application and maybe there is no need to convert the nms files.

  • I'm using the Nebula emulator in MALA.

Right now, my game list looks like this:

    gigawing
    gmahou
    goalx3
    gowcaizr
    gpilots
    gururin
    gwingj
    irrmaze
    etc., etc

....because MALA is just using the ROMS it finds in the directory to make the list.

Nebula uses its own DAT file to associate the full game names with the ROM filenames, so you get a nice list like this instead:

    Giga Wing (US 990222)
    Great Mahou Daisakusen (Japan 000121)
    Goal! Goal! Goal!
    Voltage Fighter: Gowcaizer
    Ghost Pilots
    Gururin
    Giga Wing (Japan 990223)
    The Irritating Maze

In MAMEWAH you can specify an NMS file for any emulator and it will use that to create a nice readable game list based on ROM filenames. John Crouse has a Nebula NMS file on his CPViewer site, so I've always used that. But now I'm reconfiguring my cabinet to use MALA and I'd like to have a nice readable list of games for the benefit of people who come over to play. If they want to play "Cow Boys of Moo Mesa" for instamnce, they may not think to scroll down to the ROM called "MOO". :-)

So I was wondering if MALA, or the GameList tool, had any functions which could help generate this list. If not, then I'd either have to find a MALA gamelist file that someone's already put together, or just one-by-one, copy-and-paste every Nebula title from the NMS file I have into the Game Name field in the Gamelist tool.

I admit this is kind of nitpicky, but I'm just trying to make my cabinet a bit more "user-friendly" for non-emulator savvy people.

    Thanks for the help!

  • Ah-ha!

Very simple solution, I should have spotted it earlier. I opened up the MAME main game list, selected "save names". Then I opened up the NeoGeo list, which is really just a subset of MAME roms, and selected "load list". Presto! About 98% of the names matched up, and the rest will be very easy to look up on MAMEWorld.net.
